A word of advice! At my wedding, I wanted all stargazer lilies in my bouquet. I got what I wanted, BUT I failed to consider that my wedding was outdoors in June. We had a beautiful day, but we also got every little gnat and bug in the universe who attended our wedding thanks to the wonderful smells of our flowers. Just something to think about, you might want to save all the fragrance for indoors where it can be more enjoyed.

It is not that expensive to add personal touches to your wedding. Whether it is a guest/photo book (I just saw this idea online and thought it was a great one) including all your engagement photos, one per page and an empty page for guests to sign in or adding a special touch to the ceremony or reception (I love including stories about how the couple met or what they plan to do with their new life together on the dinner tables). These things don’t cost a lot, but add a wonderful personal touch to your event. So use your brain and think of ways to make the day all about you, but that won’t break the budget!

Determining what is Important

I can’t tell any bride how important it is to determine what three things are most important to you on your wedding day. Once you have made that determination (hopefully with a lot of input from your fiancée) then focus your time, energy and money in those areas. Once you have a set budget (which every couple needs), then you can adjust that budget based on what is important to you. For example, if having the best flowers is what is important, but having a video of your wedding is not important to you, then you can get an inexpensive videographer, save a few hundred or even thousands of dollars and then use those funds towards more flowers. The goal is to make your wedding day full of what is important to you!

This is my personal preference, but even if you and your fiancée’ love the simplicity of life and have chosen only black and white for your wedding, please reconsider! Even if you add only a small punch of color in a few places (say a flower arrangement here or there, or cocktail napkins or perhaps a ribbon on the cake), it will make your pictures more interesting, your decorations more interesting and its just plain ol’ the right thing to do. (PS: I am excited for the next few brides who come to me with no idea what colors they want, I have been working on some great combinations!)

Close your eyes and imagine what you want to feel when you walk into your ceremony and/or reception site! Remember that feeling! Every time you get the next “great idea” close your eyes again and imagine that new idea in your ceremony or reception space. Does it add to or take away from your feeling? If it adds, then keep pursuing it, if it takes away, then dump that idea and start anew! Remember that your wedding day is all about a feeling and creating the best environment to achieve that feeling for you and your guests! Whatever it might be.

Check the Church

If you are getting married in a church be sure to check the requirements and restrictions of the location. Many churches or other religious buildings have restrictions as to what you can decorate, remove and attach. It would be an expensive mistake to purchase decorations and flowers then find out later that you can’t use them! Always think ahead!
